Our association is named after B.K.S. Iyengar, one of the foremost yoga masters in the world. We are a volunteer-run, non-profit organization devoted to the study and teaching of yoga in the Iyengar tradition. Our members are yoga students and teachers, most of whom live in British Columbia.
In the early 1970s Maureen Carruthers and her husband, Dr. Bruce Carruthers, began studying yoga with B.K.S. Iyengar in Pune, India, and teaching classes and workshops in Vancouver. In 1976, out of that early yoga community, a small group of devoted students along with the Carruthers, Donald Moyer (now teaching in Berkeley, California) and Ingelise Nherlan (Maureen's first teacher apprentice) formed the B.K.S. Iyengar Yoga Association. Maureen, assisted by Bruce, trained all of our earliest teachers, most of whom are still teaching today and mentoring new teachers themselves. The Carruthers moved to Galiano Island in the 1990s. The community they helped to build over three decades ago is still thriving today and part of a national and international network of Iyengar yoga practitioners.
Today, our association is the hub of a large Iyengar yoga community of teachers, students and classes in many Greater Vancouver neighbourhoods as well as other urban and rural centres. We operate an information and class referral service by phone and through our website. We publish a quarterly newsletter. We organize workshops taught by local, national and international guest teachers as well as other special events such as Mr. Iyengar's 85th birthday celebration in 2003, our association's 20th anniversary celebration in 1996, a gathering to celebrate Maureen and Bruce Carruthers' place in our community as lifelong honorary members, yoga “galas” and group practices, as well as holiday parties. In 2001 we worked in conjunction with the Iyengar Yoga Association of Canada (IYAC) to host a conference featuring Geeta Iyengar, daughter of B.K.S Iyengar and Director of the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune.
Our association supports teacher training and professional development efforts and works in co-operation with IYAC to host Certification Assessments for teachers.
